Confirmed TB case in Andros
Minister of Health Dr. Hubert Minnis has confirmed that screening is taking place in Mangrove Cay, Andros after a case of tuberculosis was confirmed in the community.
Dr. Minnis told The Nassau Guardian yesterday that screening teams from the Department of Public Health are working in the community.
“I can say that I think the surveillance team and TB team are doing an excellent job,”said Dr. Minnis.
There are usually 40 to 50 cases of TB recorded in The Bahamas per year, said Dr. Minnis. As a result of the work of the surveillance teams there have only been about 24 recorded cases this year, Dr. Minnis added.
Screening is done to ensure that those in contact with infected people receive the necessary treatment if treatment is required.
Dr. Minnis confirmed that the infected individual is being treated with medication. The case was confirmed a week ago, he added.
“Residents need not be concerned. We would have already been in the community. We would have had community meetings,”he said.
