Along life’s road
And, behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.–St. Luke 1:31
Some years ago, there was a song with the lyrics,”Well, ain’t that good news.”Many of the American TV shows come with giveaways. Out of the clear blue sky, there is a knock on your door and you open it to the lights of cameras and news reporters with some executive telling you that you have won, in most cases millions of dollars.
Mind you, you are not expecting it, and you open the door with rollers in your hair and perhaps wearing an old grandma nightdress, but who cares when”good news”is at hand in full view. It does not matter the language, race, color, location or time, good news is good news.
Many of you reading this have been the recipients of good news and I would be silly to ask if you were happy, because you were and perhaps are still basking in the benefits thereof. You were asked to be wives with large diamond engagement rings, new cars, beautiful homes, successful examination results, a clean bill of health, job promotions, and unexpected phone call in the middle of the night from an estranged spouse, expressing forgiveness and returning back to the fold, or a favorable ruling from the judge. Yes, you were so very happy!
It’s December and although many may dispute that Jesus was born in this month, merchants look forward to increasing their profits by manufacturing and selling things relative to this joyous season.
The angel, Gabriel was the heavenly purveyor of good news from the Almighty Father. Firstly, he was sent to the Priest Zacharias. Although he was burning incense on the altar when he saw the angel, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him, but the angel said unto him,”Fear not, Zacharias for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.”
Good news comes to an elderly couple. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. A few years ago a United States woman delivered healthy twins at the age of 59 years. She did this for her non-fertile daughter making her mother and grandmother!
But there is more good news to be delivered. And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said,”Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”
And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her,”Fear not Mary, for thou hast found favor with God. And, behold thou shall conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest. And the Lord God shall give unto Him the throne of His father David. And He shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of His kingdom there shall be no end.”
Here, we have the Angel Gabriel confirming pregnancy, giving divine ultrasound results as to the sex of the child, recording His name and circumstances surrounding His birth, establishing His social stance, His divinity, the extent of His Kingdom and His eternal reign.
As for Mary she asks how could something like this be when God ordains into being His purpose and will. It is not for explanation but acceptance. Too many times we miss our blessing because we badger God for an explanation. Good news is good news no matter who the messenger is or the mode of delivery. Praise God!
Indeed this is a wonderful time of the year and although, with just days before Christmas and for you it is not looking like it will be a merry one, just stand by and wait for breaking good news–whatever it is that you lack–and not all the time is has to be material things, for many are lacking the love of spouses, family, children and friends. Many are lacking the acceptance into the arena of social graces. Many political and spiritual leaders have been denied the love and loyalty of their followers who have been nothing short of contrary winds to every course of direction. But for those who have suffered, good news is on the way. Just stay in Egypt until the angel brings you good news.
It is my Prayer that good news will come to you and yours at this particular time of the year. I also pray that you will be able to tell of the best good news of all ,and that is if not having done so, you accept into your life, the Christ Child. Believe me, there are many who will receive this news as the best ever.
