Bethel wants local investment encouraged
While several foreign investments have been marked to lead economic activity in 2011, President of Montagu Group Limited Owen Bethel is making the case for local investment to have just as much, if not more, influence on the development of the country.
“I think everyone is focused on Baha Mar and I think to the degree that it is certainly welcome, it would be shortsighted if that is where we stop,”he said.”The government and the population at large truly need to look at ways to encourage and develop smaller entrepreneurs so that there is a broader base of the population that can be engaged in productive means and ownership.
“I think the circumstances around the likes of[the Bahamas Telecommunication Company] privatization do not auger well for what is termed Bahamian ownership. It seems that there is more encouragement of foreign owners and it’s creating a people based on providing services and employees rather than owners. And we need to look at what we’re promoting and how we’re promoting it to encourage young Bahamians to be owners and be a part instead of the businesses and not just employees.”
