Alleged trespasser shot, killed
A man was shot and killed after he allegedly trespassed on another man’s property yesterday morning, police said.
It was unclear how police will classify this death.
Inspector Warren Johnson of the Carmichael Road Police Station said investigations into the shooting will continue to determine whether it was a case of self defense or murder.
According to Johnson, the incident was reported around 9 a.m. at the property west of Bahamas Gas on Carmichael Road.
Johnson said when officers arrived on the scene they discovered the body of a dark male believed to be in his late 30s.
Police said the owner of the property reported that he received information that people were stealing from his property. The property owner reportedly went to his land and discovered two men.
“An altercation took place and as a result of that altercation we know that one shot was fired and one of the persons was shot,”Johnson said.
He said the second man reportedly ran off during the gunfire.
When The Guardian arrived on the scene, police were on the property–which appeared to be a yard full of bush–processing the scene. There was a small dirt road leading to the area where the man was shot.
It was unclear what the alleged trespassers were trying to steal.
“We’re in the early stages of investigation,”Johnson said.”Right now we are trying to determine what led to the incident.”
He said police were speaking to the owner of the property to determine what happened.
The weapon used in the shooting was in police custody.
Johnson refused to say what type of weapon it is.
He added that police will carry out tests to determine if the bullet that killed the man matches that of the gun that was turned over to police.
Johnson said as information becomes available it will be made public.
