Wilson satisfied with second running of Marathon Bahamas

The slogan,’It’s Better in The Bahamas’, could very well describe the atmosphere surrounding and the actual running of Marathon Bahamas. Giving his stamp of approval for the successful staging of the second annual event was Chairman of Marathon Bahamas, Franklyn Wilson.

“There is no question that it is bigger and it is better,”said Wilson, who based the statement on all the comments he heard from the participants.”The constant word I am hearing, from all of these runners is…’the course was awesome’. That decision to run people into the sunrise was a huge deal. That is our country. Can you imagine being on top of the bridge and looking at that sunrise?Again, I say to everyone, in America today, it is snowing in 49 states, look where we are today, we are on the beach.”

The second hosting of the event included a 26.2-mile run for the full marathon, a 13.1-mile run for the half marathon, a six-person relay and the Susan G. Komen Bahamas Race for the Cure five kilometer run, which took place on Saturday morning. The event attracted runners from Canada, the United States, Germany, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, Israel, Brazil, Norway and here in The Bahamas. Wilson was unable to give an exact number of participants in the Sunday morning race, but gave an estimated guess of around 800.

As far as improving the race, Wilson said that he is leaving it in God’s hands, but knows that the 2012 event will be awesome.

“I just told someone else, when I was asked that question last year, what about next year, I could not foresee this. This is big, this is strong, a whole weekend of events. There were some 2,000 to 2,500 persons in hotels for those two nights, dealing with the major cure for cancer, and the President of the Susan G. Komen Foundation

International in The Bahamas working on a cure. I mean, there is so much-the Governor General hosting these persons at his home… it is just so much.”

Wilson revealed that organizing this year’s event was not easy. He thanked all who helped to make the event a huge success. Among the activities surrounding the event this year were a Health and Fitness Expo, and a round table discussion for a cure for breast cancer.
