Junior golfers set to compete fornational team

The Bahamas Golf Federation(BGF)Junior Division will be holding its national team finals at the Cable Beach Golf Course from February 25-27, 2011. Junior golfers from around The Bahamas, namely New Providence, Grand Bahama and Abaco, will be vying for spots on the 2011 Bahamas Junior National Golf team. The tournament, which is the most important one for junior golfers in The Bahamas, is set to start at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The aspiring finalists are gearing up to play, having previously qualified after competing in the Team Trials earlier this year. They have been working extremely hard on improving their games in anticipation of this event.

The team, once selected, will comprise of 14 players in the following age categories: Boys 16-17(three), Boys 14-15(three), Boys 11-13(two); Girls 16-17(two), Girls 14-15(two), and Girls 11-13(two). They will go on to compete on the big stage at the 24th Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championships in Barbados from July 4-9, 2011 against eight other countries, namely Barbados, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States(OECS).

At last year’s championships, which was held at the Lucayan Golf Course in Grand Bahama, three members of The Bahamas’team finished third in their respective age categories-Benjamin Davis Jr., Boys 16-17; Lucas Echeverri, Boys 11-13; and Asiyah Robinson, Girls 11-13. They are again hoping to make this year’s team in order to improve on last year’s performance.

As usual the competition at the Team Finals will be fierce, particularly in the Boys 14-15 and 16-17 categories, where about six persons are competing for three spots in each of these groups. The event promises to be an exciting one coming down the stretch at the back nine on Sunday.
