Ga. church pianist retires after 75 years
WINTERVILLE, Ga.(AP)–After 75 years as a church pianist, Mary Whitehead decided she’d been doing it long enough.
The congregation at Winterville United Methodist Church honored Whiethead with a special service on Sunday to mark her retirement.
The 91-year-old Whitehead spent many of her early years traveling between Winterville and Tuckston United Methodist Church, which shared a preacher and had services on alternate Sundays.
Whitehead and her husband, Wesley, worked in Savannah shipyards during World War II. She continued to play the piano during services there.
Later, the couple settled in Winterville, where they lived until Wesley Whitehead’s death 12 years ago.
She formed the Winterville Marigold Merrymakers in the 1970s to play during the town’s annual Marigold Festival.
