Democracies do not function well without a robust independent media. There needs to be a check to the powers of the state, political parties, big business, unions and the church. The media, at its best, can be this.
At election time it this role is most important. The parties and the would be candidates are seeking to get their messages out and the electorate is keen to hear, see and watch what is happening.
