Pastor responds to ‘vicious’ attack

Dear Editor,

I would appreciate your publishing of the following letter given the vicious attack by one of your columnists — Front Porch by Simon — on my character personally.

As I read his scurrilous article of Tuesday, July 5, I was stunned that the author clearly made no real attempt to answer what we three pastors were saying but rather chose to misdirect the reading public with false statements we have never made, and to characterize me as a Captain Ahab-like figure out to destroy the great white whale of the homosexual agenda. (I guess that since I dismantled the silliness of Larry Smith’s Ayatollah-like comparisons, some other silly characterization was needed.)

Simon, if I was in any way like this character that you have here represented I would hope that my board and church would ask me to leave. What a monster you described.

But I write now to expose that the real monster here is you. You hide behind the pseudonym “Front Porch by Simon”, bomb throwing and vilifying all and sundry who you deem to be enemies of the liberal utopia you want to create.

The ease with which you attempt to character assassinate those you disagree with from the safe anonymity of your “front porch” under the simple name of Simon is evidence of a coward and not an intellectual. Have some decency man and act like a civilized man who can truly represent people and their views.

Whence comes this venomous rage, this hate-filled diatribe that left you tripping over yourself trying to find more and more demeaning words to insult us with? How does a man who prides himself as an intellectual find himself reduced to such an addled state of mind, spewing such vile, vitriolic statements. Every time I concluded you could not get any more insulting you took it up another level. You’d make a good propaganda man.

Your personal hatred of me and my moral views that are in such stark contrast to yours was revealed and the mask of “Simon” looking down from his front porch was removed. Silly fellow, this was never about clearing up the issue of what we said but about an opportunity to attack me even if you had to distort what we said to do so. Most unbecoming of you. I expect better of you. Who could not see the irony in your illustration of Melville’s Captain Ahab that it was actually you shooting your hatred from your “hot heart” at the hated white whale (yours truly).

Stop being so silly, I don’t want gays killed or locked up or beat up or any other such nonsense. If I did I would not be fit for the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Disagreement of a particular lifestyle is not hatred.

This is the second time in as many weeks that slippery Simon has been called out for misrepresenting the facts (See Errington Watkins’ letter to the Editor, Tribune, June 21, 2011). Being slippery with your “facts” does not become you Simon, you who has styled yourself as a towering intellectual in full command of the facts.

It seems that you took a page right out of Kirk and Pill’s strategy guide book “The Overhauling of Straight America” (November, 1987), which states that “once the public has been beguiled into believing that ‘decency’ requires support for ‘gay rights’, public hostility must be focused upon those who remain committed to traditional morality”.

They state: “In the early stages of any campaign to reach straight America, the masses should not be shocked and repelled by premature exposure to homosexual behavior itself. Instead, the imagery of sex should be downplayed and gay rights should be reduced to an abstract social question as much as possible. First, let the camel get his nose inside the tent — and only later his unsightly derriere! … At a later stage of the media campaign for gay rights … it will be time to get tough. To be blunt, [traditionalists] must be vilified…. The public should be shown images of ranting homophobes whose secondary traits and beliefs disgust Middle America. These images might include: the Ku Klux Klan demanding that gays be burned alive or [tortured]; bigoted southern ministers drooling with hysterical hatred to a degree that looks both comical and deranged….”

Kirk and Pill would be proud of you salacious Simon. But pause and let me encourage you and appeal to your pride. If you truly believe yourself to be intellectually superior you don’t need to demonize your opponent(s) like this, nor misrepresent his/their arguments. Intellectual cowards unsure of their arguments do this. Especially when they can hide behind a pseudonym while their enemy’s name and face is vulnerable and in plain sight. The reading/listening public can benefit from decent, fair debate especially when the character and reputation of the debaters is known and respected.

For those that missed our letter, in brief the points that we made were that:

(1) It was wrong for the DPM to sign on to a resolution supporting the expansion of homosexual rights, especially given that he had not seen it;

(2) Homosexuals are not victimized and beat up in this country (as was recognized even by the recent U.S. Embassy cable leaks [Nassau Guardian, Wednesday June 22, 2011 – “Cables Examine Bahamian views on Gay Rights”, front page]);

(3) That our present laws are sufficient to protect everyone, do not discriminate against gays, and therefore do not need further amending; and

(4) That marriage is not a civil right that should be guaranteed to all consenting adults as homosexual sympathizers say, since logically a man cannot marry his mother or daughter whether they are consenting adults or not.

Now, can someone explain to me how these comments translate to hatred for gays as represented by Simple Simon? Let me leave slippery Simon with a quote from one of my last articles to counter his pathetic drivel that I hate homosexuals.

“My love and concern for the homosexual is far more genuine and sincere than your impotent idealism that would leave the homosexual wallowing in the muck and mire of his/her sin. It would be the deepest betrayal of my calling to abandon the homosexual (or any other sinner) to their lifestyle, which is why I have spent countless hours counseling and assisting them. As I have already said at other times, the real truth of the matter is that homosexuals and their sympathizers are intolerant of the church and our right to disagree with their lifestyle.”

(Notice how I sign my real name, cowardly Simon, what’s yours?)
