New Providence landfill on fire
Firefighters are battling two large fires at the New Providence Landfill, off Tonique Williams Darling Highway.
Chief of Fire Services Walter Evans said firefighters were called to the scene just before 4 p.m. today.
“When we arrived, we met heavy smoke coming from the household section of the landfill,” Evans said.
“Right now we have two large fires going right now.”
Evans said the wind is making it difficult for firefighters to contain the blaze.
“One real challenge that you will find with a fire like this is the shifting of the wind,” he continued.
“The wind is blowing in one direction now. In five to ten minutes, it will be blowing in a different direction, which means that we will have to shift our focus and our strategy.”
Three firetrucks responded to the call, but Evans said additional resources have been requested. Additionally, off duty firefighters have been asked to assist.
Officials from the Department of Environmental Health are also on the scene.
