Governing party stands by House speaker

Renward Wells.

After Leader of the Opposition Philip Brave Davis brought a motion of no confidence against House Speaker Halson Moultrie, Leader of Government Business in the House of Assembly Renward Wells has defended Moultrie as a “fair” adjudicator.

Wells moved an amendment to Davis’ motion in the House of Assembly today.

He insisted that Moultrie “restored the honor to this honorable House”.

“This House has confidence in Halson Moultrie,” Wells said as he called for the speaker to be returned to the chair.

“We will address this issue with a vote of confidence in this speaker… We are going to end this sad saga today.”

Wells said it is time to return to doing the business of the people.

Davis moved the no confidence vote after the speaker attacked him and former Chief Clerk Maurice Tynes in the House last week.

In an hour-long address, Davis asked the House to condemn Moultrie’s behavior.

However, Wells said the speaker was “provoked” by opposition members and he reiterated the government’s support of him.
