How to powerfully introduce yourself

If you tend to feel a little shy in networking situations or when meeting new people, this will help to make it easier to engage in a conversation. There are numerous occasions when we get the opportunity to introduce ourselves to other professionals. It doesn’t matter what your profession is, you can become more engaging simply by the way you introduce yourself.

Sales professionals and entrepreneurs are typically familiar with what we call the “elevator pitch”. The concept was developed on the premise of getting into an elevator only to realize you are in the presence of a prospective investor. An elevator pitch is a prepared introduction you can spit out in the time it takes to get in and out of an elevator, usually in less than 60 seconds.

However, sales pros and entrepreneurs are not the only ones who can benefit from a prepared introduction. Knowing how to introduce yourself in any situation can help you to expand your personal network. The way you introduce yourself can not only help you to engage others but can help you to build and strengthen your personal brand.

To become a more interesting person, refrain from giving long dissertations about yourself. It is much better to focus on how you help others. Think about how your job, business, product or service helps other people and the role you play.

It doesn’t matter what you do, there is no such thing as an unimportant job. However, people often talk about what they do as insignificant. You can say you are a teacher or you can say “I help to shape the minds of the future”. You can say you are a customer service representative or “I help to increase revenue through focus on client satisfaction”. I think you get it. The way you describe your role can give an indication of the value you bring, as well as the enthusiasm you have for your job.

Imagine the response of someone who happens to be looking for a customer service rep for their company.

An elevator pitch usually contains the following components:

‘Hi, I’m ______.

‘I help ______ (problem you solve in one sentence).

‘By ______ (give a solution in no more than two sentences).’

‘I use/I give ______ (your qualifications or benefits you provide).

‘You will come away with ______ (three things they will get).’

Here is an example:

Professionals are often overlooked in the workplace and business because they struggle to communicate in the way they want to be perceived (problem).

I help them to communicate with more polish and intention. This helps them to develop stronger presence and increase their power to influence (solution).

My degree is in communication, I have an extensive background in sales and marketing and I’m a trained voice actor. I draw from these disciplines to help my clients (benefits).

I have had clients enhance their professional persona, strengthen professional relationships and even earn promotions.

Write your own and memorize it; let me know if you find this helpful.
