Gail North Saunders to receive 2018 lifetime award

15 Bahamian Icon Awards to be handed out

Gail North Saunders will receive the 2018 Bahamian Icon Award for lifetime achievement for her trans-generational contributions to nation building.

Winners in 15 categories for the sixth anniversary of the program that honors excellence and achievement in Bahamians will be announced at the ceremony to be held at the Melia Nassau Beach on July 7.

The Bahamian Icon Awards acknowledges the exemplary achievements of men and women who have excelled in various industries thus contributing to the overall development of the Bahamian community.

Addis Huyler, chief executive officer, said the awards’ mission is to provide an achievable goal that inspires and encourages consistent efforts to achieve excellence and the fostering of goodwill.

Huyler said greatness never happens by accident or coincidence; while opportunity can be the result of serendipity, luck or any number of variables that may lie outside of a person’s control, greatness comes only with the conscious effort to work harder, be stronger, be smarter and more dedicated in an effort to manifest the highest and truest expression of oneself.

“It is a chosen life trajectory that is only undertaken when coupled with immense courage and a resolute ambition to succeed,” he said.

This year, luxury footwear brand Samba Sol will give each nominee a pair of the eco-friendly Miami-based flip-flops. Additionally, all VIP guests will receive a promotional card and a special discount for their first purchase of Samba Sol flip-flops.

“We are thrilled to have Samba Sol as a part of our team,” said Huyler. “They have been able to seamlessly blend luxury with environmental responsibility, and we are excited to provide a platform to showcase their brand to our audience.”

Samba Sol was created out of love for art, fashion, comfort and the environment, according to Beau Beasley, marketing and sales director of Samba Sol.

“We have become a medium for artists to express their artistic vision to be enjoyed by others as a fashionable, sustainable canvas, worn comfortably all over the world, thus turning art into fashion,” said Beasley.

He added, “Our activations are handpicked, and we are honored to be part of the Bahamian Icon Awards this year.”

The Icon Awards show will be broadcast live on Our TV with red carpet beginning at 5:30 p.m. The awards ceremony will begin at 8 p.m.

To be nominated for an Icon Award, nominees must be a Bahamian citizen, registered company or recognized organization. They are considered based on specific contributions made to the betterment of the Bahamian society at large and/or outstanding achievement in any of our specified categories. Nominees must have made a specific contribution or achievement in the two calendar years prior to the nomination deadline. Nominees also must submit a statement on their backgrounds, briefly outlining the reasons why they should be considered.
