Comedy Tain: A night of conscious lyrics and laughter

Two of the Caribbean’s cultural giants will be in New Providence this weekend for a night of conscious lyrics and laughter. Mutabaruka, a Rastafari dub poet, musician, actor, educator and talk show host well-known for his booming voice and unapologetic delivery, will be the headline act of Comedy Tain, hosted by Nubian Kween entertainment. He will be joined by dub poet Yasus Afari, who has performed the world over with the likes of Garnet Silk, Black Uhuru, Tony Rebel, Freddie McGregor and Maxi Priest.

Mutabaruka is known for touching on themes that include politics, culture, Black liberation, social oppression, discrimination, poverty, racism, sexism and religion, but he is also known for being full of life and big laughs, which he plans to bring to the stage on Saturday, June 30, at the William Thompson Auditorium, on Jean Street.

Comedy Tain is designed to bring culture and comedy together for a night of fun and a fusion of the arts, where Bahamian artists could take the stage along with their Caribbean counterparts. Mutabaruka and Yasus Afari will be joined by Professor Nuts, Dufton Shepherd, Michael “Stringbean” Nicholson, Yanet Campbell, Princess Abdiel, Zee the Flame Goddess and Bahamian cultural band Ubuntu.

This inaugural event, which will be hosted annually, will be held at the William Thompson Auditorium on Jean Street on Saturday, June 30.

An art exhibition will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., show time is 8 p.m. Tickets are available at any Cash and Go location, or at the Pepper and Spice Restaurant in Palmdale. General admission is $35, VIP is $55 in advance and $50 and $70, respectively, at the door. Part proceeds from this event will be donated to Jamaica Diaspora Association Bahamas CommUNITY, the Princess Margaret Hospital’s “Wheel Chairs” Project and The Alpha Boys Home Music Room “Instruments” project.
