It’s a Fantastic Friday

A two-month hiatus has left Fantastic Friday fans frantic for the hottest end-of-month party on the social calendar. Star106 Hits principals and Visage, known as the country’s number one party band, say you have to wait no more, coming together to give you a mid-month reprieve tonight.

And the Balmoral Club is where you want to be tonight.

“Everyone says we are overdue,” said Tony Williams, programming director at Star 106 Hits. “So the folks who enjoy the live band sounds of Visage, and soca music, will be happy we’re back.”

Anyone who has attended a Fantastic Friday knows that it’s the monthly hot party ticket, which is why it was missed so much.

Since its inception, principals have spoken to being pleasantly surprised at the crowds that flock to the event, and floored by its popularity. They say they are pleased to give Bahamians the kind of party experience they crave.

“It’s really become a wonderful event,” said Visage leader Obi Pindling, after their first-year anniversary in an earlier interview. “I think all of us are now looking back at each other and saying, ‘Why haven’t we been doing this all along?’ It’s grown that big.”

Visage, a group that’s known as the hottest party band in town, is just that because it’s stacked with talent, with Dyson Knight, Wendi Lewis-Knight, Nehemiah Hield, Benji, Shawn Ferguson, Charisa Smith and Mei Lin Wong charged with vocal duties.

“The band’s frontline consists of tons of star power and vocal talent,” said Pindling. “I keep a full roster of singers in case some may be away at solo gigs, without losing or forfeiting on the entertainment quality of the performances.”

And that right there is why Visage is always hot, hot, hot!

Then there’s Pindling himself on keyboards/guitar, Ian Young on bass, Sammy Lightbourne on guitar/bass, Keiran Roker on keyboard, Antoyne Hinsey on keyboard and Carlos Dean on drums.

Fantastic Friday started out in the Bullion Bar at the British Colonial Hilton Hotel, and grew so big that they had to open the venue’s doors to the patio out back to allow for the spillover. The party then moved to Munasan at the Superclubs Breezes for a few months, and Visage is now taking to the stage at the Balmoral Club.

Fantastic Friday was actually the brainchild of Pindling, who approached the British Colonial Hilton hotel principals with the idea in December 2012, after they had played at the hotel’s corporate Christmas event. Pindling said they received many compliments as well as comments from the people who attended that the band should consider playing on a regular basis at the venue. He approached the Hilton with the idea of the happy hour event. It was an idea they liked, but at that time the ducks did not line up in a row. Visage played the Hilton’s corporate Christmas event again at the end of 2013, and after the same response from patrons Pindling pitched his idea again. That time the stars aligned.

They discussed it throughout January 2014. Pindling contacted Williams to see if Star 106 Hits would be interested in getting in on the event that he hoped would fill an entertainment void for “grown folks” looking for a nice, cozy, comfortable, classy venue where they could have after-work drinks on a Friday and dance to good music — old school rake ‘n’ scrape and soca — and just have a good time.

Williams loved the idea, and Star 106 Hits was on board.

Initially Pindling described the happy hour social event as the greatest five hours every month in local entertainment – this month they’re giving fans an extra hour to enjoy the music with six hours of party time scheduled.

Williams encourages everyone to come out to the party; rain or shine he said the party is on, with DJ Ming also providing dance music.

To make up to their fans the doors open at 7 p.m., and patrons can party until 1 a.m.

As an added bonus, BTC and Star 106 Hits will be giving away prizes throughout the night, and luxury retailer Omega Motors will have a BMW vehicle on display for patrons to get a look at and feel for, just in case they have a couple of extra dollars lying around and feel like purchasing a new car.

Admission to this special mid-month Fantastic Friday is $20 per person with complimentary valet parking.
