AU too much for IBA Elite
The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks outscored the IBA Elite by 11 points in the third quarter to defeat them 103-80 in Thursday night action in the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s (BBF) ‘Summer of Thunder’ at the Sir Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium.
Leading the way for the visitors was Carlos Hines with 25 points. For the locals, Jackson Jacob was the high-point man with 20 points.
The visitors opened the first quarter on a 9-0 run. The Elite’s Joshua Dames ended the run when he connected on a jump shot to make it 9-2 with seven minutes to go in the first quarter.
With 2:30 to go in the quarter, the Lumberjacks’ Cameron Shelton gave his team a 24-12 lead after hitting a jump shot of his own from inside the arc.
It was a high scoring first half for the visitors as they dropped 28 points in the quarter. They went into the second quarter with a 28-19 lead.
The second half was more competitive as the Elite stayed close. Jacob hit a jump shot to bring the Elite within two points, trailing 36-38 with 4:16 remaining in the quarter.
That was the closest they got to the visitors in the first half. The half ended 44-53 and they both scored 25 points apiece.
The third quarter was more different. The visitors took a commanding control of the game to lead by as much as 23 points. A lead that came from a Johnathan Andre tip-in from a Hines missed shot. The score was 72-49 with 4:56 remaining in the quarter.
The locals tried to chip in the lead but only got the lead down to 15 when Azaro Roker scored a jump shot with just over two minutes to go to make it 59-74.
When the whistle blew to end the quarter, the score was 62-82 in favor of the visitors.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lumberjacks. They led by as many as 29 points after Keith Haymon scored a layup with 4:25 remaining in the game.
The locals were making some simple turnovers. They turned the ball over four times despite being down by 29 points.
The game ended 103-80 as the visitors won.
Andre got a double-double to help his Lumberjacks. He scored 18 points and had a game-high 12 rebounds in 25 minutes of play. Sheldon chipped in with 15 points and six assists. Rounding out the double digit scoring was Ted McCree who finished with 13 points, six assists and two blocks in 26 minutes of play.
In the losing effort, Roker finished with 20 points, four assists and a block in 35 minutes of play. Tevin Hudson almost had a double-double scoring 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The visitors shot a blistering 54 percent from the field as the locals only shot 37 percent. Both teams shot 33 percent from three-point territory with the Elite scoring 11 of their three-point shots and the Lumberjacks scoring eight.
The Lumberjacks have two more games remaining. They played Starsports last night but no scores were available at press time. They will take on the University of The Bahamas on Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Kendal G.L Isaacs National Gymnasium.
IBA is finished playing in the ‘Summer of Thunder’.
