The word of God is the benchmark for life

Now, Israel, hear the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land the LORD, the God of your ancestors, is giving you. Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you.

. . .Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”
– Deuteronomy 4: 1-2, 6-7

These are evil times in which we live. The devil is destructive. He is seeking to misdirect you away from God’s word. He tries to make you feel that you are right in your wrong. But remember, God’s word is your benchmark. God’s word stands for truth. It is firm and never changes. You can rely upon it. It is the only thing that is forever and unchanging.

Hold on to God’s word. It is your road map for life. God’s word does not change. Yes, mankind changes, because mankind is imperfect. God is perfect, righteous, holy and unchanging.

In our world today, we are accustomed to changing things. We tend to want to make everything relevant to the times. Many people think that the Bible is not relevant to today’s needs.

It does not matter how we may feel about God’s word. Our feeling does not make God’s word right or wrong. God is the creator and we are the creatures. The clay does not control the potter. God is the potter.

In the above text, Moses recounts the deeds of the mighty and wonderful God to the people, the Israelites. This mighty God had delivered them from the cruel hands of the Egyptians, who had enslaved them for hundreds of years.

The people stood at the threshold to the Promised Land. Moses reminded them to adhere to God’s commands when they crossed over into the Promised Land. In doing so, their God would sustain and protect them from their enemies.

When the people lived in accordance with God’s law, they enjoyed the favor of God. This is the same for us who live in these times. God’s word is constant. It does not need any improvements.

God is the creator. He does not say one thing today and something else tomorrow. We humans change because we are imperfect. We say one thing today and tomorrow, we change our minds and say something different.

Governments update laws, from time to time in order to make them relevant to the times. This happens because human laws are imperfect and consequently change constantly. Often in changing the state laws to make them relevant to the times, these laws come into conflict with God’s commands.

Many people want God’s word to say and mean what they want it to say. Consequently, it has become common place for the church, in our times, to add and subtract from God’s word.

At some point during the history of Israel, after Moses, the religious leaders established their tradition as law. They had created new laws and called them God’s law. They were going against Moses’ instructions, “do not add . . .do not subtract.”

To deviate from God’s command and create our own laws is an affront to God. Whether we like it or not, we cannot improve upon God’s word. Furthermore, God does not need the courts, governments, the church or anyone to update or modernize his word. The word of God is the benchmark for life. It is unchanging and eternal. Amen.
