Signature Bahamian work “Der Real Ting!!”, created and directed by Philip Burrows, which features 25 iconic Eddie Minnis songs arranged by Fred Ferguson with vocal arrangements by Adrian Archer, will highlight Ringplay Productions’ 10th annual Shakespeare in Paradise Theater Festival, October 1—13.
The script was written by Nicolette Bethel, Patrice Francis and Burrows, with choreography by Ricardo Christie. An opening night gala performance of this work will take place on October 10 in the Winston V. Saunders Theatre at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts. Tickets for the gala evening will be $100. Performances will continue October 11—13 with tickets priced at $30, which will also be the cost for all other shows in the festival.
The signature Shakespeare production this year is “Much Ado About Nothing”, featuring a cast of 16 performers under the direction of Erin Knowles, associate artistic director. The work opens October 3 and runs through October 6 and will also have its run in the Winston V. Saunders Theatre at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts.
Another new work in this year’s festival is an evening of plays called “Short Tales”, which will feature 10 new 10-minute plays by 10 Bahamian writers in the Philip A. Burrows Black Box Theatre at the Dundas Centre for the Performing Arts. A group of eight directors, working under the guidance of Nicolette Bethel and Anthony “Skeebo” Roberts, will be responsible for what is expected to be an exciting evening of theater. The production will also feature some 30 actors, both veterans and newcomers.
Shakespeare in Paradise has partnered with the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas to showcase the special event evenings. The first evening, Tuesday, October 9, will feature “The Making of Der Real Ting!!”, a talkback at Fiona’s Theatre, the gallery’s new amphitheater, with the legendary Eddie Minnis on his work as a visual artist, cartoonist, songwriter and singer. The panel will also feature the creators of his new musical “Der Real Ting!!” — Burrows, Bethel, Patrice Francis, Ferguson, Archer and Christie.
Paul Hanna will also appear in concert at Fiona’s Theatre on Thursday, October 11 in his amphitheater debut.
Shakespeare in Paradise, in association with Superior Productions, will present “Truth and Laughter”, an evening with vocalist “JudahThaLion & the Truth” featuring his thought-provoking lyrics and soulful music, hosted by Sawyerboy on Tuesday, October 2 at 8 p.m.
As usual, Shakespeare in Paradise will be presenting student matinee performances as has been done each year of the festival. This year SIP will offer four student matinee performances of “Der Real Ting!!” and “Much Ado About Nothing” and two matinee performances of “Short Tales”. All matinee performances during the festival begin at 11 a.m. and all evening performances at 8 p.m., except for the gala evening of “Der Real Ting!!”, which gets started at 7:30 p.m.
