The University of The Bahamas (UB) Mingoes men’s soccer team, behind great defense, was able to turn back the Western Warriors 2-1 in preseason action in the Bahamas Football Association (BFA) on Sunday.
The Mingoes’ two goals were courtesy of Elcott Johnson in the 35th minute and an own goal in the 70th minute, as they prevailed in a close match at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Field.
“Today was a good psychological win because we’ve played the Warriors before and they’re a top class team and we’ve drawn with them but never beaten them, and they’ve beaten us,” said Mingoes Head Coach Dion Godet. “This doesn’t say that we have a cakewalk in the regular season but this says we can climb the mountain and we got to the top today. It was a good win and a good effort by the Warriors. It was a good booster for the team.”
Even though Godet is thankful for the win, he felt the team could have played better.
“I would have liked to have seen more offense, and traditionally our offense is a challenge as our defense is always rock solid,” said Godet. “Defense, I would again say won the game by keeping the score as close to zero as possible but we need to find a way to produce goals because that’s what wins games.”
With a few weeks before the start of the season, Godet said the team still has a few things to improve on if they want to repeat as champions. So far, they’ve won both of their games of the preseason.
“We have to work on our passing and thinking quick,” he said. “That’s the big thing, if we’re going to be at the top of the league we have to think quick.”
The Mingoes finished with an 8-1 win-loss record last year, and won the league title.
