Defenders sweep NPVA action

The Lady Defenders and Defenders picked up wins on Sunday in the New Providence Volleyball Association’s women’s and men’s divisions respectively.

The Lady Defenders had a tougher time than the men. They defeated the pesky Truckers in five sets. The men swept Da Basement in three straight sets.

Opening with the win in the first set was the Truckers. They took an early 5-2 lead in the set as they showed they are up to the task. The game began to slip away from the Lady Defenders. They were forced to call a time out as the Truckers took a comfortable 14-6 lead.

That time out made no difference as the Truckers extended their lead to 18-9. When the second time out was called, the score was 22-14. The Truckers won the set 25-16 and headed into the second set.

In the second set, the Lady Defenders decided to keep the score close and jumped out to a 3-1 lead. Things were tied at 8-8 until the Truckers took a two-point lead at 20-18.

That lead did not last as the Truckers relinquished a three-point lead to tie things up at 23-23.

This set ended in a 25-25 tie. Each team won a point before it was tied against at 27-27. The Lady Defenders took a 28-27 lead before holding on to a 29-27 victory.

This tied things up heading into the third set. The Lady Defenders won this set. The Truckers turned around and won the fourth set, setting up a very intriguing fifth set.

In the fifth and decisive set, the game was very close in the beginning with the Lady Defenders holding on to a 9-8 lead. They took their biggest lead of the set at 14-9. The Truckers could not stage a comeback as the Lady Defenders won 15-10. The Defenders won the game 3-2.

The Truckers never led in the fifth set.

In the men’s game, the Defenders made light work of Da Basement, defeating them in three straight sets.

In the first set, Da Basement did a good job of keeping the game close, tying the score up at 12-12.

The Defenders used six straight unanswered points to take a 18-12 lead before Da Basement called a time out.

The Defenders used a 7-2 run to end the set at 25-14.

After a tough loss in the first set, Da Basement came out looking better in the second set. However, despite scoring more points, they lost the set 25-21.

Da Basement had a difficult time in the third set. They went down 23-13 at one point. They valiantly fought their way back to get the score to 24-18.

They did not have any more left in the tank as the Defenders ended the set 25-18 to win the match.

The Lady Defenders sport a 5-0 win-loss record and sit at the top of the table. This was the Truckers’ first loss of the season; their win-loss record is 3-1.

On the men’s side, the Defenders is perfect at 5-0 on the season. Da Basement is at the bottom of the table with no wins and three losses.

Next up for the Lady Defenders is the Lady Techs at D.W. Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m.

The Truckers will play the Vixens on Sunday, October 21 at 3:30 p.m. at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.

Playing tomorrow night in women’s action is the Vixens against the University of The Bahamas Mingoes at 7:30 pm. They will play at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs National Gymnasium.

Da Basement will play the Technicians on Friday, October 19 at 9 p.m. They will play over at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.

The Defenders will play the Warhawks on Friday, October 26 at 9 pm. This game will also be at the D.W. Davis Gymnasium.

Playing tomorrow night are the Warhawks and the Technicians at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium. They will play at 9 p.m.
