UB President’s Golf Classic gets underway today

The University of The Bahamas (UB) is hosting its President’s Golf Classic and Spa Day at the Royal Blue Golf Club and the Caribbean’s first and only ESPA at Baha Mar today.

The event is a way to raise money to raise funding for first-generation university students and grow the university’s endowment as it strengthens connections with alumni, donors and friends. The endowment is to realize the vision of the University of The Bahamas into reality.

Dr. Rodney Smith, president of UB, said the response so far has been good and encouraged more people to come forward and participate in the golf event.

“The response has been good. We still have some spaces left and we would like folks to please come forward and come by the foursomes. If persons do not want to do the foursomes, we will also have a golf clinic going on. We also have a spa day going on as well,” Smith said.

He continued: “The university now has a varsity golf team. UB is in a very unique country. On this island, we have all four of the kinds of golf courses that are required for Professional Golf Association (PGA) certification. The university will be starting up a new golf varsity team that will be able to compete with other colleges and university in other countries.”

Leno Bahamas is one of the sponsors of the event. Sean Longley, president of Leno, said as the company grew it wanted to give back.

“We said we wanted to give more so when this opportunity came up for UB’s Golf Tournament we thought it would be a good opportunity. I went to the College of The Bahamas, now UB. I am happy to see what they are doing and we just wanted to be a part of it,” he said.

Longley said he will be playing in the tournament along with his three other team members.

The price for individual players is a $250 donation while the foursome is a $250 donation per player or a $200 donation for Bahamas Golf Federation members. To do the ESPA it’s a $250 donation and the golf clinic is also a $250 donation.

Individuals or teams will compete for top prizes including a hole-in-one competition for a 2018 Five Series BMW.

Registration opens at 8 a.m. today at Blue Tavern at Baha Mar.

There will also be a reception afterwards at the Golf Club.
