The 17th Annual Bul Reg New Year’s Day Regatta was deemed a great success, wrapping up in the waters of Elizabeth Harbour, George Town, Exuma, on Tuesday.
There were seven ‘C’ Class boats that took part in the three-day regatta this year, and an additional six participated in junior races in the ‘E’ class.
The overall winner was Bul Reg, skippered by Exuma native Leslie “Buzzy” Rolle. Termite, skippered by Delano Bowe, and Golden Girl, skippered by Tyron McKenzie, finished second and third respectively.
The regatta committee, led by Chairman Cecil Smith, Vice Chairman Kendal “Iceman” McPhee, Treasurer Don Rolle and Founding Chairman Leslie “Buzzy” Rolle, thought it would be fitting to host this year’s regatta in honor of the late Cecil Newbold who was a strong supporter of sailing. The three honorees were Enoch “Big Knox” Rolle, Randolph Smith and Ricky Rolle who were founding members of the regatta.
In attendance during the ceremony were Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources Pandora Rahming who commented that they are proud supporters of the regatta; Barry Wilmott from the regatta desk of the Ministry of Agriculture and Marine Resources; Patrick Hanna from Bahamas Information Services (BIS); and Rev. Dr. Philip McPhee, former sailing consultant in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and owner of the WG Thunderbird.
The committee is thankful to all of the sponsors, and the hundreds of spectators who came out to observe the action on the waters.
