The reported measles outbreak in parts of the United States and the collapse of Venezuela’s health care system, “could pose a clear and present danger to the health of our children”, Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands warned today.
“I think we have to be concerned with not only what’s happening in the United States, but more importantly, what’s happening in Venezuela,” he told reporters.
“Given the collapse of Venezuela, there has been a huge problem with its public health capacity. So, we now see serious threats to the region. So, the Ministry of Health recognizes that we have to go back and look at strategies to increase our immunization coverage, not just for measles but for a number of other vaccine-preventable diseases given the collapse of the public health system in a huge country in South America.
According to the Associated Press, the measles outbreak near Portland has impacted 35 people in Oregon and Washington since January 1, with more cases suspected.
