Rockets, Elite pick up wins in the NPBA

The New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) had four teams in action on Wednesday night at the C.I. Gibson Gymnasium. In division one action, the Discount Distributors Rockets stomped the Leno Regulators, 105-80. It was a nail-biter in division two, as the Basden Elevator Elite edged Leno’s Eagles Nest, 76-75.

Rockets 105, Regulators 80

The Discount Distributors Rockets had four players in double figures including David Taylor with a game-high 30 points. Dominique Beadle chipped in with 15 points, and Quintine Demeritte and Cordero Pinder dropped in 10 points each. Taylor hit four three-pointers in the game.

For the Leno Regulators, Renardo Baillou had 19 and Cordero Thompson scored 12. They were the only players in double figures for the Regulators as they lost convincingly, 105-80.

Baillou had 17 rebounds to record a double-double. His teammate Johnathan Carey grabbed 15 rebounds in the loss.

Pinder also completed a double-double by securing 11 rebounds. Rashad Saunders was the other Rockets player in double figures on the glass with 10.

The Rockets had a better night from the field, shooting 47 percent from the field including 37 percent from beyond the arc. The Regulators shot 33 percent from the field and a dismal 18 percent from behind the arc.

The Rockets had 34 fast-break points compared to 18 for the Regulators.

At the end of the first half, the Rockets were ahead, 57-31. The Regulators outscored the Rockets 25-22 in the third quarter to cut into the lead a little, but they were still significantly behind.

The Rockets took a 79-56 lead into the fourth quarter and cruised the rest of the way. They led by as much as 30 points in the game before cruising to the easy win.

Elite 76, Eagles Nest 75

With four players in double figures, the Basden Elevator Elite pulled off a close 76-75 victory over Leno’s Eagles Nest.

Leading the Elite team and all scorers was Tario McKenzie with 21 points. Livigi Forbes dropped in 17 points, and Simar Rolle and Dario McKenzie scored 11 each in the win.

Uriah Rolle led the way for Eagles Nest with 15 points. Jeffrey Williams had 13, Johnacy Augustin scored 12 and Tyrell Butler dropped in 11.

Tario McKenzie lead had a game-high eight rebounds.

The Regulators ended the first quarter on an 8-2 scoring run to take a 22-17 lead after one. They were up 39-32 at the half, and took a 60-56 lead at the end of the third quarter,

Late in the fourth quarter, the Elite’s Simar Rolle made a lay-up to tie the game at 71. That came with 1:31 remaining in the game. Forbes gave the Elite team a 73-71 lead on a lay-up and they never relinquished the lead after that.

With nine seconds remaining in the game, Simar Rolle made one of two free throws to put his team ahead 76-73.

Instead of going for a potential game-tying three-point shot, the Regulators elected to go for a short jump shot and missed. They managed to get the offensive rebound and hit a lay-up as time expired.

Six teams will be in action tonight.

The Elite team will take on the Sun Oil Rockets in the first game at 7 p.m., and in the other division two game, the Caro Contractors Titans will battle the Your Essential Store Giants. The feature game of the evening, in division one, will see the Commonwealth Bank Giants try to keep their perfect record intact against the PJ Stingers.

All games will be played at the C.I. Gibson Gymnasium.
