Include Jesus in your desires
“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13
The Concise Oxford English Dictionary among a number of definitions for the word “things” describe things as personal belongings or clothing and/or a person or animal in terms of one’s feelings of pity, approval etc. Consider how many heated arguments and injuries – even death were committed because someone was trying to take away or seduce their lover or their “things”.
I love the song “My Favorite Things” from the “The Sound of Music” musical. It gives a clear picture of the many things that are morally valuable for the composer’s peace of mind.
“Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens; Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens; Brown paper packages tied up with strings; These are a few of my favorite things.
“Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes; Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes; Silver-white winters that melt into springs; These are a few of my favorite things.
“When the dog bites; When the bee stings; When I’m feeling sad; I simply remember my favorite things; And then I don’t feel so bad.”
Everybody likes things – especially new things – be it a home, car, clothes, jewelry and yes, new relationships! For quite a while, the then Meghan Markle, now Duchess of Sussex, kept it a secret that she had found a new “thing” in the person of Prince Harry. Marriage is all about “my things” and woe to anyone that tries to rob or snatch.
Matthew 6:33 gives positive, lasting, spiritual and moral advice: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
Hebrew 11: “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
I don’t have it but I know what I want, and deep down within assures me I will get it.
I don’t hear it sung really anymore and I think it is a good thing. “Lord, I care not for riches, neither silver nor gold. I would make sure of heaven, I would enter the fold.”
Isn’t it always puzzling, many of the children of the most-high God live at the crossroads of pauper boulevard and poverty avenue! Why? Because Christ is not held in high esteem in their lives, they want and hope for things, but they do not want the kingdom and the leader of the kingdom to interfere.
How many times do others look at the success of another and tell themselves they can do the same. But the question is, is the strength of Christ in it? Then, it is not being zealous, but jealous. You can’t sing a note, but because Mary can sing and hit the high notes, you tell yourself that if Mary can sing, so can you.
Today Jesus wants us to find what we are best at doing and include him in your desires. The late Martin Luther King said that if it’s only the humble job of sweeping floors, streets or whatever, if you do if with the strength of the Lord, then heaven will have to dub you the best sweeper in the world. Now go forth to do your own thing in the name of Jesus the Christ. Victory is yours.
