Registration now open for 2019 GBPA Conchman Triathlon
FREEPORT, The Bahamas – The overwhelming support shown for the GBPA (Grand Bahama Port Authority) Conchman Triathlon last November, from triathletes near and far, has prompted the organizing committee to begin early registration for the increasingly popular competition, which is scheduled for Saturday, November 2 on Taino Beach in Freeport, Grand Bahama, this year.
Online registration is open for the 33rd annual event, and interested persons can register online at the website www.conchmantriathlon.com. All event categories are open, including individual sprint, individual olympic, relay team, corporate challenge, secondary school challenge and the crowd favorite, the IronKids Competition. The public is asked to take advantage of the 50 percent early registration discount presently being offered until September 30. The $50 fee for the sprint is the lowest registration fee for such an event in the Caribbean.
The GBPA Conchman Triathlon, commonly known as the Conchman, is expected to draw large numbers again this year. A record number of 200 athletes participated in the event last year, 46 teams competed in various categories and over 30 participants travelled to Grand Bahama to compete.
Chairman Christopher Baker is encouraged by the positive feedback the committee has received from competitors and is confident the Conchman will continue to attract athletes from other countries and the Family Islands. He attributed a lot of the Conchman’s success to the support of the event’s sponsors.
“We are grateful to all our sponsors,” said Baker. “Without the sponsors, the Conchman Triathlon would not have been in existence for over 30 years. We thank them for their support and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the years to come.”
The chairman noted that the triathlon does require additional funding each year to grow, and to “promote it throughout The Bahamas, the United States, around the Caribbean and elsewhere.”
Indicators suggest that past advertising campaigns to international triathletes have been effective. Baker noted: “We are already seeing the benefits of these promotions with the increased numbers of participants from the U.S., Trinidad and Antigua. Each year we set out to beat our previous participant numbers. We support our fellow events, like the Potcakeman, Ride for Hope, and they in turn support us. The Bahamas is really beginning to shine in this arena, and who wouldn’t want to swim, run and bike in this gorgeous country?”
Chairman Baker is also a triathlete.
The GBPA is the title sponsor of Conchman Triathlon. Other sponsors include Scotiabank, BTC, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, Pharmachem, UNEXSO, BWA, Barefoot Marketing, Kelly’s, Freeport Ship Services, Atlantic Medical, 242newsbahamas and Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach.
