Tourists lose $31k for failing to declare

A man and woman who failed to declare their casino winnings to U.S. Customs lost their money and got criminal convictions yesterday.

At their arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney, Mario Kiezi, 28, and Samantha Kiezi, 27, both of Detroit, Michigan, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to declare.

They declared that they were traveling with less than $10,000 on their customs form in the pre-clearance lounge at Lynden Pindling International Airport, Inspector Philip Davis, the prosecutor, told the court.

While at the counter, they filled out a second form claiming that they were carrying $24,000, Davis said.

However, when the money was counted, it was discovered that they were traveling with $31,266. As a result, they were arrested.

During their police interviews, they said they won the money at the Atlantis casino.

McKinney seized the money and ordered each of them to pay a $500 fine to avoid spending three months in prison.
