The game of softball is alive and kicking in the country as the 5th Annual Sam Haven Softball Tournament officially started the 2019 season on the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex this past Saturday.
In the process, an icon in the banking community – a strong supporter of Banker’s League Softball in the country and a long-serving director and member of the Banker’s Athletics Association – the late Sam Haven, was honored posthumously. Haven passed away five years ago.
“We were able to get feedback from the tournament, and it was said that it was great as teams played in honor of a past giant in the Banker’s Athletics Association – Samuel P. Haven, as we continue to celebrate his life,” read a press release from the association.
A total of seven teams took part in the one-day tournament on Saturday. The opening pitch was delivered by Pamela Haven, wife of the late Sam Haven, and the games commenced at 9:30 a.m. At the end of a day of competitive softball, the Outsiders came out on top, crowned the 2019 Champions.
The women’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) was Larikah Russell of the Outsiders, and the men’s MVP was her teammate Alcott Forbes.
The other six teams which took part in the tournament were Scotiabank, CIBC FirstCaribbean, Fidelity Bank, the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Commonwealth Bank and BAF Financial. The C&S Hitmen took home the championship trophy in an upset last year.
Now that this year’s tournament is over, teams will begin preparation for the start of the 2019 Banker’s League softball season which commences this Saturday on the Banker’s Field.
