American man fined $1,000 for drugs
n American man on a cruising permit was yesterday fined $1,050 after he pleaded guilty to having hashish and marijuana.
Rick Appel, 63, of Malibu, California, was arrested by immigration officers on March 26 for overstaying.
Police later boarded Appel’s 50-foot catamaran that was moored at Riding Rock Inn in San Salvador.
During a search of his living quarters, the officers found five grams of hashish and two grams of marijuana.
Appel’s lawyer, Dion Smith, said that he was in constant pain from 24 orthopedic surgeries and used marijuana for pain on the advice of a doctor, as the opioids he was prescribed for pain were addictive.
Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain fined him so he would avoid spending 30 days in prison.
