Modified pitch league set to return
The New Providence (Wholesalers) Modified Pitch Softball League is set to begin today at field three at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex.
This season, games will be played on Saturdays and Sundays.
Its male-only league caters to players from as young as 15-years-old. A number of senior national team players in fast-pitch softball were introduced to the game at the modified pitch level.
League President and Treasurer Loretta Maycock said they are expecting an exciting opening today.
At present there are five registered teams, and a few more are slated to come on board.
The registered teams are the Outsiders, the Airborne Freight Stallions, the Undertakers, the Smokin’ Rams and the Young Boyz.
The opening ceremony is set for today at noon. At 1 p.m., the Young Boyz will go up against the Outsiders, and at 3:15 p.m., the Undertakers will take on the Smokin’ Rams.
On Sunday, the Stallions will play the Young Boyz at 1:45 p.m., and the Outsiders will battle the Undertakers at 3 p.m.
The league was created with the objective of fostering inter-social relationships between employees of various wholesale companies. One of its goals is to create a clean, positive and wholesome atmosphere of camaraderie among employees while away from their workplace.
The league is returning after a 10-year hiatus. The last champions were the Truckers.
