Prison guard remanded on drug charge

A prison officer accused of smuggling almost two pounds of marijuana into the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services (BDOCS) on April 3 was remanded to prison yesterday.

Vernard Hinsey, 39, of Pineyard Road, pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of dangerous drugs with intent to supply at his arraignment before Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.

Prosecutors allege that Hinsey had six drug-filled packages, with a combined weight of one pound 11 ounces, taped to his body when he reported for duty.

As Swain lacks jurisdiction to consider bail for the charge, Hinsey was remanded into custody.

However, his lawyer Ramona Farquharson-Seymour can seek bail in the Supreme Court.

Hinsey returns to court on June 13 for his trial.
