Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis yesterday revealed that the government signed a contract with a company last week to commence a probe into the matters that led to the removal of the former board of Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) in August.
Speaking to reporters on Inagua, Minnis said, “Yes, we’ve signed the contract already, selected the company and they should commence their questioning and investigations very soon.
“But I know everything has been signed. No, I’m not giving you the name of the company, not yet. With time you will get that.”
The prime minister added: “That was signed just last week.”
The Nassau Guardian understands that the company contracted for the probe is an international financial investigations firm.
Last year, Minnis promised that the government would launch an investigation into the matters that unfolded among some former members of the BPL board and Minister of Public Works Desmond Bannister.
Former BPL Executive Chairperson Darnell Osborne and other BPL board members were replaced by a new board amid a series of allegations.
At the time, Bannister said the relationships among the old board members had significantly deteriorated, and they were at odds on almost every critical issue at great cost to the company, which ultimately necessitated new leadership.
Osborne and former board members Nicola Thompson and Nick Dean refuted Bannister’s claims, calling them “untrue, inaccurate and misleading”.
The former board members also said “political interference” and “continuous disrespect” toward Osborne were at the root of the former board’s dysfunction.
Bannister later admitted there was political interference, but claimed it was after he learned BPL paid for a makeup bill and other bills for Osborne, claims she struck down.
