Man drowns trying to escape from police

A man suspected of breaking into a Sea Breeze home apparently drowned in a canal after he attempted to evade capture today, police said.

The man, believed to be in his late 20’s, was one of three men suspected of breaking into a home at Bay Lily Drive. Police said a concerned citizen contacted them about the ongoing crime.

When police arrived at the home, officers observed the men running away. Two of the suspects were caught almost immediately, police said.

The third suspect jumped in a nearby canal. As the suspect swam away, he came under distress police said.

Officers jumped into the canal to assist and pulled the suspect to the shore.

Despite receiving CPR, the suspect was pronounced dead on the scene by medical personnel, police said.

The other two suspects remain in police custody.
