Three arrested after $1.6 mil. marijuana bust

Police seized $1.6 million worth of marijuana following a high-speed chase in waters off South Andros yesterday.

Superintendent Jamuel Ferguson, who heads the Drug Enforcement Unit, said police were acting on a tip when they intercepted a white 27-foot speedboat shortly before 6:30 a.m.

“The suspects attempted to evade the officers but the officers were able to intercept the vessel,” he said.

Ferguson said the chase lasted 15 minutes.

He said police found three Bahamian men, who are in their late-30s and early-40s, onboard the boat. Ferguson said the men had no weapons on them.

There were 43 bales of marijuana onboard, which weighed 1,627 pounds, police said.

“We know one of the suspects would have been charged sometime last year with drugs and the others, they are known to us,” Ferguson said.

The men were arrested and brought to New Providence, according to Ferguson.

They are expected to be arraigned next week.
