Stunning results in early games at high school nationals

There were a few stunning results in the early games of the 2019 Samuel P. Haven Jr. High School Soccer National Championships on Tuesday at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. In senior girls play, the Government Secondary Schools Sports Association (GSSSA) Champions Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves turned back the runners-up in the private school sector, the St. Andrew’s School Lady Hurricanes, 1-0; and the runners-up in the GSSSA, the C.R. Walker Knights, got past the Grand Bahama Secondary Schools Sports Association (GBSSSA) Champions, the Sunland Baptist Stingers, in a penalty shootout. In senior boys play, the runners-up in the private school sector, the Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS), the Aquinas College Aces, blasted the GSSSA Champions, the Government High School (GHS) Magic, 5-1; and the runners-up in the GSSSA, the Knights, blasted the Lucayan International School Buccaneers out of Grand Bahama, 6-2. The semifinals were held yesterday as the Timberwolves and Lyford Cay International Dragons and the Knights and Tabernacle Baptist Academy Falcons battled in senior girls play; and the Dragons and Aces along with the Falcons and Knights played in the senior boys division. The championships are set for Saturday.

Senior girls

Anatol Rodgers 1, St. Andrew’s 0

The Anatol Rodgers Timberwolves got a goal from Destiny St. Fleur to move past the St. Andrew’s Lady Hurricanes, 1-0, in their single elimination game. The Timberwolves took on Lyford Cay International Dragons in the semifinals yesterday.

C.R. Walker 1 (4),
Sunland Baptist 1 (2)

It was a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time, sending the game into penalty-kicks. Abigail Victor scored the only goal for the Sunland Baptist Stingers while Chelsea Daxon scored for the C.R. Walker Knights in regular time. In the penalty kicks, the Lady Knights came out on top 4-2, winning the game and moving on to take on the Tabernacle Baptist Academy Lady Falcons out of Grand Bahama in the semifinals.

Senior boys

Aquinas College 5,
GHS Magic 1

In a highly anticipated match, the Aquinas College Aces picked apart the Magicmen of Government High School (GHS), making them disappear from the nationals with a 5-1 drubbing. Aquinas got two goals from Robenskey Nevilas, and goals each from Keon Dean, Tekeyo Poitier and Jordan Fremantle. Morgan Wood led the way for the Aces’ defense letting just one goal at the back of the net. That win sets up a rematch of the BAISS Championship game with the Aces taking on the Lyford Cay International Dragons. That game was played yesterday. The Aces were looking for revenge after falling to the Dragons in the BAISS Championship.

C.R. Walker 6, Lucayan
International 2

In the final game of the day, the C.R. Walker Knights exploded on the Lucayan International Buccaneers out of Grand Bahama. The score was 6-2 when the dust had settled. The Knights got two goals each from Brandon Adderley, Mickendy Paul and Dion Desamours. The Buccaneers got two goals from Nicholas Lane. The Knights set up a semifinal game against the Tabernacle Baptist Academy Falcons that was played late last night.

All of the games are being played at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Field.
