Fire at BAMSI building in New Providence
A fire broke out on the third floor of the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI) off East Bay Street on Thursday night.
Fire Services Chief Fire Officer Superintendent Thomas Lightbourne said fire services received reports of the fire shortly after 10:30 p.m.
“We proceeded with a complement of fire appliances, police and fire officers,” Lightbourne said.
“On our arrival we met smoke coming from the north eastern section of this building. We quickly proceeded to have this extinguished.”
Lightbourne said the fire was primarily confined to the roof of the building but two rooms were affected by flames.
“It did minimal damage to an extent,” he said.
While noting that only the ground floor was occupied, the superintendent said the damage should not stop operations.
When asked if the fire was the result of arson, Lightbourne responded, “We are getting information that we have a suspect in custody that we believe may be responsible for this fire.”
