A 21-year-old man was killed following a daytime drive-by shooting on Dunmore Street on Wednesday, police said yesterday.
Police said a silver Honda Fit pulled up to a convenience store, where the victim was gathered with two other people, when the occupants in the vehicle opened fire at the crowd.
The victim, who has been identified by a relative as Bradley “BJ” Smith Jr., was shot and later died in hospital, according to police.
Bradley Smith Sr., the victim’s father, broke into tears as he stood in the same spot where his son was shot one day earlier.
Wiping tears from his eyes, Smith said, “I was home when my goddaughter called me yesterday and told me what happened. I couldn’t believe it. I told her not to joke like that.
“I said, ‘Get off this phone if you gonna be playing like this.’
“But she was serious.”
He added, “I can’t take it. I couldn’t even take to see him in the morgue, knowing he ain’t going to leave to go home with me. I couldn’t take seeing him like that. I don’t even know where he got shot.”
Smith described his son as a “funny and lovable guy”.
“BJ was mannerly, very mannerly,” Smith said.
“I mean he gave me some trouble growing up but that’s how boys are. He outgrew that. He wasn’t a part of no gangs or nothing like that.”
The murder count for the year so far is 38.
