St. Cecilia’s School hosts inaugural S.T.R.E.A.M. Day
St. Cecilia’s School recently hosted its first S.T.R.E.A.M. (science, technology, religion, engineering, the arts and math) Day – an entire school day dedicated to STEM-related (science, technology, engineering and math) activities and projects for students. The idea behind the effort was to create fun, diverse opportunities for students to explore STEM topics and to inspire involvement in STEM-related activities throughout their educational experience and beyond, making S.T.R.E.A.M. an expansion of STEM.
Janelle Albury, director of development at the Catholic Education Centre, said S.T.R.E.A.M utilizes the principals of STEM, infuses religion across all subjects and adds the arts to provide students with the creative thinking skills necessary to communicate and advance STEM in the real world.
Twelve unique stations for kindergarten to 6th grade students were set up. Each station featured technology which can be integrated into the curriculum to help increase students’ analytical skills. Visitors to the booths got the opportunity to manipulate various technologies including coding, robotics and engineering. Each exhibit station was manned by students who had an in-depth knowledge about the relevant technology.
Corporate partners for S.T.R.E.A.M. Day included Aliv and Innovative Science, who participated in the event and were instrumental in creating a successful day of memorable activities. Aliv introduced students and teachers to the Aliv Discover app and demonstrated how the app can be used to enhance learning.
The Innovative Science exhibit offered an interactive experience to help students better understand the importance of water supply and how to protect it. The exhibit challenged students to think about what each of them could do to reduce waste and prevent pollution.
St. Cecilia School’s S.T.R.E.A.M. Day was organized by teachers Yolande Samuels Cole, information technology teacher, and Candice King, art teacher.
“We recognize the need to promote STEM opportunities within the curriculum and at an early age,” said Cole. “Our school also strongly feels that it is extremely important that our community be involved with our schools. This event was a way to demonstrate both principles by partnering with others and exposing our students to a world beyond the walls of our classrooms.”
