Man fined $500 for stealing

A man who admitted to wrecking a car as he attempted to steal parts from it was yesterday ordered to pay fines totaling $500 to avoid spending six months in prison.

Deangelo Bethel, 29, of Bowe Avenue, Montell Heights, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted stealing and causing damage at his arraignment before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux.

Security caught Bethel trying to steal the air conditioner compressor, the front and right-front suspension and the alternator from Merlin Adderley’s Honda Fit on June 18.

He also admitted to causing $2,196 in damage to the 2004 vehicle in his attempt to remove the parts.

Bethel begged the magistrate not to send him to prison. He said that he was prepared to pay compensation or donate to a charity to avoid prison.
