New Providence at the bottom of TripAdvisor top destinations list

Although The Bahamas has made the list of the top ten destinations in the Caribbean for TripAdvisor’s 2019 Traveler’s Choice Awards, New Providence ranked at the bottom of that list.

New Providence came in last behind Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Barbados, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands, St. Lucia, Providenciales in Turks and Caicos and Guadeloupe.

American-based TripAdvisor is one of the largest online travel platforms and provides first-hand reviews from travelers of destinations, hotels, restaurants and other travel-related content.

The nominees and winners of the Traveler’s Choice Awards are chosen by millions of travelers, according to the TripAdvisor website.

The Bahamas has experienced substantial tourism growth over the past year, with a total of 6.6 million total visitor arrivals in 2018 – the highest in recent years.

Another spike in visitor arrivals followed in the first two months of 2019, peaking at 23.7 percent, up from the projected 15 percent.

This growth continues despite regular travel advisories issued by the United States Department of State. The most recent was issued in April, listing The Bahamas as a level two country where tourists should exercise increased caution due to crime.

More than 80 percent of visitors to The Bahamas travel from the United States.
