Man jailed for loaded gun
A 21-year-old man was on Wednesday jailed for having a loaded gun in his car.
Sirnario Miller, of Yamacraw Hill Road, pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition at his arraignment before Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.
Police searched Miller’s Honda Accord outside Club 100 in the Golden Gates Shopping Center after an anonymous caller reported seeing a man put a gun inside the vehicle, Inspector Claudette McKenzie told the court.
The officers found a black Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol with its serial number erased and two rounds of ammunition in the magazine in the glove box, McKenzie said.
Police arrested Miller and two other men who were with him. McKenzie withdrew the charges against those men following Miller’s guilty plea.
McKenzie said that he had no previous convictions.
Miller’s lawyer, Dion Smith, asked the court to be as lenient as possible given his client’s youth and early guilty plea.
Smith said that the construction worker was remorseful for his actions.
Swain sentenced Miller to one year in prison for the firearm. He could face another year in prison if he doesn’t pay a $5,000 fine for the ammunition.
