Two men were killed on New Providence in the span of nearly 12 hours over the weekend, police said.
Police said a man was sitting outside a home on Lucky Hart Corner, off East Street, shortly before 3 p.m. on Sunday when he was shot by a gunman.
The 21-year-old died on the scene, police said.
A short time after the incident, the victim’s mother, Tiffany Demeritte, arrived at the scene.
Demeritte, who identified her son as Donte Demeritte, sat in the dirt next to what she said was a drying pool of her son’s blood.
“Get up please baby,” a distressed Demeritte whispered.
“Get up. Get up. Get. Get up.”
Demeritte’s friends attempted to hold her but she brushed them off.
“Look how they shoot my son like a dog in this dirt,” she cried out.
“Just get up please for mummy. Just get up this last time. Look at my baby’s blood.”
Eventually, the mother grabbed a plastic cup and scooped up some of the blood-stained dirt.
Murder on Roland Street
Police said the first murder of the weekend occurred on Roland Street, Ridgeland Park shortly before 4 a.m.
Police said a man was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“We do not see any nexus between the two incidents,” Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash said yesterday.
“Given our initial stage of the investigations, we have not established any nexus nor do we know any motive behind any of the incidents.”
The murder count for the year stands at 51.
