Pipe leak at GPO ‘embarrassing’
Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Leader Philip Brave Davis yesterday expressed concern over the safety of staff at the Town Centre Mall after a pipe burst in the building last week.
“We are concerned about the safety and security of workers at the Town Centre Mall now,” Davis told reporters at PLP headquarters.
“We’ve always been concerned about the structural integrity of the Town Centre Mall and we continue to be.”
On Friday, Minister of Transport and Local Government Renward Wells said the General Post Office (GPO) sustained water damage as a result of a pipe bursting during upgrades to the sprinkler system.
Operations at the post office resumed the same day and the incident had minimal impact on the overall function of the facility, according to Wells.
However, Davis described the incident as an “embarrassing debacle” and suggested it was the result of “rushed” renovations “to respond to public outcry”.
The General Post Office was officially relocated to the Town Centre Mall in May, after months of delays and years of complaints from employees over the substandard conditions of the former East Hill Street location.
The move was shrouded in controversy as St. Anne’s MP Brent Symonette, a former Cabinet minister, and his brother are owners of the mall.
The opposition has called for the lease of the space to be tabled in Parliament.
