Ridgeland Park murder victim’s girlfriend denied bail on gun charge

The girlfriend of a man who was shot to death over the weekend, on Tuesday faced charges of illegally possessing a handgun and ammunition.

Shantia McKenzie, 23, appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt, two days after her boyfriend Cabrio Wells was gunned down in Ridgeland Park.

Officers arrested McKenzie shortly after Wells’ murder on August 4 when they allegedly found a .45mm Austria Glock and 10 rounds of ammunition at her Ridgeland Park home.

McKenzie pleaded not guilty to charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition at her arraignment before Ferguson-Pratt.

McKenzie returns to court on August 12 for a status hearing and her trial date is scheduled for November 11 and 12.

Wells, the brother of Transport Minister Renward Wells, had a pending gun possession case before Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain.
