Two Bahamians arrested during drug bust off Florida
The United States Coast Guard arrested two Bahamian men, five Jamaican men and an Italian during a drug smuggling bust off the coast of Florida last Thursday, the Coast Guard said.
According to the Coast Guard, 67 packages of marijuana were found onboard a 27-foot boat.
The Coast Guard said the group was found on an improperly lit 27-foot cabin cruiser, which was intercepted by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) roughly seven miles east of Government Cut, Florida.
Five Jamaican men, one Bahamian man and one Italian man – all believed to be migrants – were found on the vessel, according to the Coast Guard.
The Coast Guard noted that another Bahamian man, who is suspected of being a smuggler, was also found on the vessel.
In a statement, Petty Officer 1st Class Emily Wilhite commended CBP “who prevented this illegal voyage from making landfall”.
“Together with other Department of Homeland Security components and local law enforcement partners, we will continue to diligently patrol throughout the Caribbean Basin and Florida Straits to stem the flow of maritime smuggling,” Wilhite said.
