Another BPL fire
One of the Bahamas Power and Light’s (BPL) rental generators caught on fire yesterday afternoon, BPL officials confirmed.
“BPL is confirming that a fire at the Aggreko site at the Blue Hills Power Station resulted in the loss of a one-megawatt Aggreko generator,” BPL Spokesman Quincy Parker said in a statement.
“At this time, investigations are underway as to the cause of the fire. We will update the public as information is made available.”
Director of Fire Services Superintendent Walter Evans said the fire broke out after 12 p.m.
He said firefighters arrived at the power station less than eight minutes after the fire was called in, noting that officers were met by “heavy black smoke”.
“At this stage, we know [the generator] has received some significant damage but at this point, we cannot say to what extent because it’s still a hot zone,” Evans said.
“Once we are able to make an interior attack, particularly from an investigative aspect, then we’ll be in a better position to say if it’s been totally destroyed or whether it’s received extensive fire damage.”
Evans said it took less than seven minutes to put out the fire.
