Aliv restores 80% of network on GB, Abaco
Aliv has restored 80 percent of its network on the storm-ravaged islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco, Chief Aliv Officer Damian Blackburn said yesterday.
The effort, he said, involved assistance from international partners that transported nearly 100,000 pounds of equipment to the islands, as the company worked swiftly to restore communication to those impacted by Hurricane Dorian.
“I’m pleased to report, within a week of the storm passing we now have coverage on both Grand Bahama and Abaco, with LTE and 3G service that is covering 80 percent of where the population live and work,” Blackburn said during a press conference at the National Emergency Management Agency’s headquarters on Gladstone Road yesterday.
“This has been an incredible effort by the Aliv team and by the Cable Bahamas team, whose fiber we used for most of the sites. It’s an unprecedented effort by those teams and indeed we’ve been assisted by lots of international partners, who airlifted more than 80,000 pounds of network equipment to the islands and distributed all that network equipment to the right places by boat.”
Blackburn said Aliv has already restored power to the entire West End of Grand Bahama and Freeport.
“So, in West End, places like Eight Mile Rock, Holmes Rock, Bootle Bay and Sea Grape are all able to use the Aliv LTE and 3G network. In Abaco, even more incredibly in a way, we’ve just switched on the site at Treasure Cay and the only places on the main island of Abaco where we don’t have coverage are Cooper’s Town and Blackwood, and I can assure everybody that those will be on tomorrow,” he said.
“We will then start on the cays, which are the last remaining places in Abaco without Aliv network coverage. None of this could have been done without the large planning, preparation and dedication of the Aliv, Cable Bahamas and REV teams. The dedication they’ve shown had over the last several days to serve their fellow Bahamians is humbling to the core.”
