Holistica – Royal Caribbean’s joint venture with the ITM Group – will not only continue to move forward with its proposed developments on Grand Bahama, it sees its investment on the island as a “major shot in the arm” after the passage of deadly Hurricane Dorian.
Royal Caribbean’s Chief Executive Officer Richard Fain was quoted in an article on sea-tradecruise.com as saying the Holistica project will “create momentum” for the island.
Fain also said the beginning of Holistica’s project could represent a “visible rejuvenation” of the island.
The government and Holistica are in the middle of negotiations to renovate the Grand Lucayan and to completely transform Freeport’s cruise dock. Minister of Tourism Dionisio D’Aguilar told Guardian Business recently that those negotiations could be finished near the end of the year, but it is not yet known how Hurricane Dorian’s effects could disrupt those negotiations.
Royal Caribbean revealed in a press release sent out last week that the Grand Bahama Shipyard, which is owned by both Royal Caribbean and Carnival Corp., is back in operation, putting 300 people back to work, it said.
Fain also said in the article that Royal Caribbean’s private island CocoCay was unscathed by Hurricane Dorian.
“You wouldn’t know a storm had been through,” Fain said in the article.
“The Bahamas is still a marvelous destination and 99 percent of it is pristine.”
Carnival Cruise Line is also expected to begin the development of its own cruise port on Grand Bahama.
The cruise line confirmed its commitment to going ahead with its project in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean committed sizeable contributions to hurricane relief efforts for The Bahamas.
