McKenzie is the leading goal scorer for the Lady Matadors

YUMA, Arizona – Bahamian collegiate freshman Tyra McKenzie is performing well for the Arizona Western College (AWC) Lady Matadors this season, leading her team in scoring.

Their offense continued to roll as they scored at least seven goals in their third consecutive match, defeating the Glendale Gauchos, 7-1, at the Matador Soccer Field in Yuma, Arizona, last Thursday. Since then they have gone on to defeat the Phoenix College Lady Bears, 2-1, and currently sport a 4-2-1 win-loss-draw record on the season.

Last Thursday sophomore Vera Asare was sensational for the Lady Matadors with three goals and an assist, spurring the offense as they scored six times in the second half to cruise to another win.

After many near chances in the first 20 minutes against Glendale goalkeeper Bryanna Norwood, the Matadors’ first goal came off of a rebound on the far post when Asare finished a near miss with a goal. The Glendale defense didn’t surrender many other chances in the first half and AWC held on to the 1-0 lead at the break.

Asare scored again in the 47th minute, Elizabeth Ephraim added a goal in the 57th minute, and Karen Rivas found Linda Obare on a beautiful pass 14 minutes later, setting up Obare’s first goal as a Matador. Obare then set up teammate Parmira Candia, adding a goal from a cross in the 74th minute.

Asare scored again just one minute later, netting her third goal and the Lady Matadors third in just five minutes, extending the lead to 6-0.

McKenzie struck late, on some beautiful passing from her teammates, adding the seventh goal in the 83rd minute.

Glendale broke through just three minutes later when Abigal Abbott lofted a ball over Lady Matadors goalkeeper Melanie Yanez to snap the Lady Matadors clean sheet streak dating back four matches.

Arizona Western College is one of the top community colleges in Arizona, and competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.
