Immigration officers conduct operations on Abaco

Immigration officers yesterday began carrying out operations in shantytowns on Abaco, including The Mudd, Pigeon Peas, Sand Banks and Treasure Cay Farms.

The operations were headed by Director of Immigration Clarence Russell. Immigration Minister Elsworth Johnson was also present.

Russell, however, said he was unable to give any numbers or information on the results of the operations.

Immigration also conducted operations on New Providence that resulted in the arrest of 30 Haitians for “suspected infractions against the Immigration Act”.

Of them, 10 were later released. The 20 still in custody include four women,15 men and one child. Two of the women and one man were detained for having outstanding fees. All the others have no legal status in the country.

Officials said they will all be charged in the Magistrate Court.
